During the 1920s her two favorite novelists were Joseph Hergesheimer and Carl Van Vechten.

Claridge rather cruelly dismisses Hergesheimer as just a popular society novelist, though he was more than that, as readers of his novella “Wild Oranges ” know.

Wally Hergesheimer, 87, the New York Rangers’ leading goal-scorer of the early 1950s and one of the most popular players of his time, died of congestive heart failure Sept. 27 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

When Hergesheimer joined the Rangers in the 1951-52 season, he was smallish even for his era, at 5 feet 7 inches and 145 pounds, and had to overcome the partial loss of two fingers in an industrial accident when he was a teenager.

But Hergesheimer was adept at scoring off rebounds and loose pucks in front of the opposing net.
