"The worrying reverberations of the Budget are clear to see in our survey data," said Shevaun Haviland, the BCC's director general.

“Navel orangeworm could be a nightmare … but it could also become less of a problem because all the things that eat it benefit more from the heat than the navel orangeworm,” said Haviland.

While that might seem small, if you do the math “it’s going to be a lot of millions of dollars lost to this pest,” said David Haviland, a Kern County farm advisor with University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources.

“You’re literally managing a pest by preventing it from being born in the first place,” said Haviland of both sterile insect technique and pheromone mating disruption.

Speaking to Radio 4's Today programme, Shevaun Haviland, director general of the BCC said "the last few years have been choppy times for business", referring to Covid, inflation and high interest rates.
