Georgia Secretary of State Brian Raffensperger said the affected polling places in DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett Counties would stay open late to account for the lost time.

In Georgia, the penny tax increases are on the ballot in Cobb and Gwinnett counties, which make up Atlanta’s prosperous northern suburbs, and would commit more than $20 billion to bus rapid transit and other transportation infrastructure if approved.

The opposition is made up of antitax groups who say Atlantans prefer their cars, and they succeeded in defeating a similar proposal in Gwinnett in 2020.

One says they obtained US citizenship within six months of arriving and have voted for Kamala Harris in Gwinnett and Fulton counties in Georgia.

“It’s just about one placebo or the other placebo,” said Cassius Martello, a 23-year-old social media consultant from Gwinnett County, who said he will vote for Harris.
