The Trust for Governors Island announced on Tuesday that it has appointed Lauren Haynes as the new head curator and vice president of arts and culture for the 172-acre island, situated in New York Harbor with ringside views of the Statue of Liberty, Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn waterfront.

Mr. Butzel later enlisted in campaigns to preserve open space on Governors Island and to build Brooklyn Bridge Park.

She spent time with Bettina, warming her to the idea of a shared show at Governors Island, and the resulting exhibition became Bettina’s first public showing of her art in some 40 years.

Thomas Bolyn Smothers III was born Feb. 2, 1937, on Governors Island, New York, where his father, a Navy major, was stationed.
