While climbing Sinister Peak in the Glacier Peak Wilderness, Okerlund had to dash out of the path of a cascade of basketball-size rocks.

Matora ran 2:09.50, less than a second off the meet record of 2:08.61 set by Glacier Peak’s Amy-Eloise Neale back in 2013.

Last year’s runner-up, Glacier Peak, is the No. 10 seed.

“There’s some little residual heat in both Mount Baker and Glacier Peak; you get a few scattered hot springs. But in terms of ones that are certainly still connecting to the whole deeper process of subduction is Mount St. Helens.”

If you’re lucky enough to make the top on a clear day, look to the east for a particularly spectacular glimpse at Glacier Peak.
