Heavy rain was falling in Gifu and Mie prefectures on Saturday, as the Japan Meteorological Agency urged people "to remain vigilant for landslides, flooding and overflowing rivers".

The traffic jam occurred on the Meishin Expressway in Gifu prefecture.

The Ground Self-Defense Force, Japan’s army, dispatched troops to join relief efforts at the request of the governor of Gifu.

Down river from Oze, the usho of Gifu City have a larger, more tourism-oriented operation.

“I go to the river every day so I can feel the changes,” Adachi said, drawing upon nearly four decades of working on the Nagara River in Oze, a town in central Gifu Prefecture.
