The main Christian militia, the Lebanese Forces, was led by Nadim Gemayel’s father, Bashir, until he was assassinated in Achrafieh in 1982 after being elected the country’s president.

Gemayel has long called for Hezbollah to give up its weapons.

In 1982, Christian president-elect Bachir Gemayel came to power with Israeli and U.S. support.

“This is a war between Iran and Israel on Lebanese territory,” said Sami Gemayel, an MP with the Kataeb party, a long-time rival of Hezbollah.

“Unfortunately, today, we’re all stuck,” Gemayel said.
