Gauguin

“Nevermore” is one of Paul Gauguin’s most celebrated paintings — and a pride of the Courtauld Gallery in London.

Prints by Gauguin and Whistler imbibe Hokusai’s blocky colors and flattened spaces.

A strong challenge came from Paul Gauguin, a friend of van Gogh’s, or rather a frenemy.

The couple had seen how the garden handled exhibitions of Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol and Paul Gauguin.

The gallery ceilings have been raised, and the ornate molding that framed the rooms holding Armand Hammer’s collection — which includes works by van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Rembrandt — is gone.
