Dupuy said members of his Galatia Baptist Church, local restaurants and other volunteers are helping prepare or pay for meals for the residents at the home.

The state Environmental Protection Agency is asking the Illinois Attorney General’s Office to order American Coal Co. to immediately cease the discharge of coal slurry and other contaminants into Bethel Creek from its Galatia mine.

The other mine in Galatia, New Future Mine, will remain open.

The Galatia Cemetery has been in existence since the 1800’s, though the date of the first burial has likely been lost to history.
