Fort Kearney

To promote the service, the Pony Express made an “extra” run in November to deliver the results of the 1860 presidential election to the West Coast in a record seven days from the new end of the telegraph line in Fort Kearney, Neb.

Because most of the land is private, you have only a few viewing options: the Rowe Sanctuary’s blinds, which are open for tours March 6 through April 11; the Crane Trust, which hosts visitors at its blinds through March; and the public-viewing platforms on the Gibbons and Fort Kearney bridges.

The visitor center at Fort Kearney, located five miles southeast of Kearney, will open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

When uncle reached Fort Kearney, as we afterwards learned, he found that the Illinois train had passed through there two weeks before.

After we had passed Fort Kearney in the month of July, we saw great herds of Buffalo going north.
