The Paris prosecutor's office said Amra had been convicted of burglary by a court in Evreux on May 10 and was being held at a prison in Val-de-Reuil until his escape on May 14.

Recently sentenced for burglary by the judicial tribunal in Evreux on May 10, he is also under investigation for an attempted organized homicide in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray and a kidnapping that resulted in death.

The convoy was transporting Amra back to jail in the Normandy town of É������ܳ� after a hearing with an investigator in Rouen when it was ambushed on the A154 freeway.

The prisoner was being transported between a courthouse in É������ܳ� and a prison in Rouen when men armed with “heavy weapons” attacked the van he was in, Mr. Dupond-Moretti said.

Mr. Amra had been found guilty of theft by breaking and entering by a court in É������ܳ� last week, and he had also been under investigation in Marseille, a southern Mediterranean city, in connection to a kidnapping and homicide case.
