Eleanor of Provence

Four red pales in a golden shield were borne by Eleanor of Provence, queen of Henry III.; but the number did not commend itself to English armorists.

He was employed to negotiate a marriage between king Henry the Third and the fair Eleanor of Provence.

As one goes up the Thames towards St. James’s, End of the Town, where the King and most of the Nobility reside, one passes along by a Palace called the Savoy, because it was built by the Princes of Savoy, Uncles of Queen Eleanor of Provence, Wife to Henry III.

Even more numerous and no less expensive to the realm were the Proven�al and Savoyard relatives of Henry’s queen, Eleanor of Provence.
