It’s an important line of inquiry, says Patrick Schmidt, an archaeologist at the Eberhard Karl University of Tübingen who was not involved with the study.

Eberhard, who owned a liquor store, bar and restaurant, broke his leg twice playing soccer before retiring in Woodland Hills not far from Pospich, who owned an automobile dealership and played in old-timers games into his 60s and now lives in Calabasas.

“I won’t be able to sleep tonight,” Eberhard said.

Discovered in 1895 by German explorer Hermann Eberhard, Mylodon cave contained exceptionally well-preserved remains including pieces of skin, fur and dung.

Fortuitously, they were able to compare Eberhard’s sample with Darwin’s original fossils from Argentina, noting a resemblance.
