Frank Donnelly, 88, recalled receiving a Sir Alexander Fleming medal from its namesake as a third year secondary pupil at Darvel School in 1952.

"He had been a boyhood hero of mine and my twin brother's," Mr Donnelly said.

Jim Donnelly, executive vice president for comedy at Universal Television, said the show’s youthful appeal helps replenish the audience.

Donnelly said on Instagram: "I cannot believe it, this is the best day of my life... apart from the wedding and the kids and all that, but apart from that it's the best day of my life."
