Sources have told the BBC that, at the closed-door UN Security Council's Sanctions Committee in Doha late last year, the Taliban admitted that at least half of this equipment is now "unaccounted" for.

It also showed that more than 70 flights expected to arrive at the airport had been cancelled, including from Doha, Riyadh, Dubai, Manchester, and Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The 63-year-old spent nearly two weeks in a hospital in Doha after becoming unwell, external on a flight that took off from Heathrow on 3 March.

"The heads of state then agreed on the need to continue the discussions initiated in Doha in order to establish solid foundations for lasting peace," it added.

However, it stated that it was approaching the ongoing discussions in Doha with "full responsibility and positivity".
