"Apple and Meta have fallen short of compliance with the DMA by implementing measures that reinforce the dependence of business users and consumers on their platforms," said Commissioner Teresa Ribera.

Apple has previously claimed that opening up services including its app store to third parties, as required by the DMA, could be bad for users.

Under the DMA, platforms must comply with a list of do’s and don’ts – such as not giving preference to their own services over rivals – under threat of hefty financial penalties or even breaking up businesses.

The commission said Booking.com “now has six months to comply with the relevant obligations under the DMA, offering more choice and freedom to end users and fair access of business users to the gatekeeper services.”

"We designed Subscription for No Ads to address several overlapping regulatory obligations, including the DMA... we will continue to engage constructively with the Commission," they said.
