"It is an incredibly powerful and poignant message," said Andrew Aldridge, managing director of Henry Aldridge & Son, an auctioneer based in Devizes, Wiltshire.

Market gardener Phil Collins, from Bromham, near Devizes, said: "There is not going to be enough food grown in this country if things go on like it is."

Following defeat in the 1987 election, he returned as MP for the West Country seat of Devizes in 1992 until he retired from the House of Commons in May 2010.

Wiltshire Police said the officer left his marked patrol car to speak to people in a parked vehicle on a field near Devizes on Saturday morning.
