Dello Joio, born in New York, probably thought the future of this piece was assured when it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1957.

The Taylor company’s performance of Graham’s “Diversion” sang; the choreography’s lyrical current and interconnection with its music — it’s accompanied by a neo-Romantic orchestral score by Norman Dello Joio — have never seemed clearer.

Here the Orchestra of St. Luke’s rose to make the most of Norman Dello Joio’s score; controversy arises about how the Taylor dancers handled the Graham choreography.
