Roberts in which the winsome Violet de Vinne consults Holmes — and a smitten Watson — about the theft of Lady Barton’s pearls.

The exhibition also offers a chance to appreciate the enduring contribution to the cityscape made by De Vinne and his architects, Babb, Cook & Willard.

Ms. Tichenor and Michael Koenig curated the show at the Grolier Club, an organization of book lovers that counts De Vinne among its founders.

Its presence is inescapable in the show, “The Dean of American Printers: Theodore Low De Vinne and the Art Preservative of All Arts,” which opens Wednesday at the Grolier Club, 47 East 60th Street.

“This building is such an expression of De Vinne and his ideals of printing and craft,” said William J. Higgins, a Grolier member and a principal in Higgins Quasebarth & Partners, consultants in the restoration and rehabilitation of historical buildings.
