De Mistura met with officials in Morocco’s capital on Friday after touring Dakhla and Laayoune, its two largest cities, for the first time.

Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released parts of the letter, praising Israel’s recognition and its decision to consider opening a consulate in the Western Saharan city of Dakhla as “both just and farsighted.”

Twenty-eight other countries - mostly African and Arab - have opened consulates in the Western Saharan cities of Dakhla or Laayoune, in what Morocco sees as tangible support for its Western Saharan rule.

As part of this recognition, Israel is mulling opening a consulate in Dakhla, the statement said.
