The Huntington Park City Council has chosen a local civil service commissioner to replace former Councilmember Esmeralda Castillo, whose seat was declared vacant after a probe determined she was not living in the city.

The group said it looked forward to working with officials, notably Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, who represents downtown, to ensure that “the loss of these trees signals the beginning of the end of the ongoing corrosion of DTLA’s public realm.”

City Councilmember Traci Park, whose district includes Pacific Palisades and who has advocated for more Fire Department funding, said that the mayor’s proposal was a good sign but that the city should go further.

Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, who represents part of the Eastside, also voiced alarm at the planned reductions.

Councilmember Traci Park, who represents the Palisades, proposed such a policy in January, but the council is waiting for a report from several city departments on its feasibility.
