Congress on Racial Equality

Speaking of his work with the civil rights group the Congress on Racial Equality fighting to desegregate housing and the school system, Sanders explained, “Injustice is something I have always fought, for all my life.”

While a student at the University of Chicago, Sanders was involved in the Congress on Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

His 1975 film, a satire of Blaxploitation films, “Song of the South” and other genres and tropes, “Coonskin,” came under fire from the Congress on Racial Equality, which protested the film’s racial satire, but has since gained a cult following that includes the Wu-Tang Clan and Quentin Tarantino, among others.

Sanders attended Brooklyn College for a year, then transferred to the University of Chicago, where he joined the Young People’s Socialist League and the Congress on Racial Equality.
