Their third round pick at No. 84 was used on Kelowna Rockets defenseman Caden Price while Belarus centerman Andrei Loshko was taken in the fourth round at No. 116 after two seasons with Chicoutimi in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Chicoutimi defenseman Matteo Mann learned firsthand how difficult it is to defend Bedard when the two practiced together at the CHL prospects game in January.

One of Mr. Snow’s paternal great-grandfathers, James Beaty, had been mayor of Toronto and a member of Canada’s Parliament in the late 19th century; more recently, his maternal grandfather, Elzear Lévesque, had served as the mayor of Chicoutimi, Quebec, about 125 miles north of Quebec City.

Lapierre started learning Russian when a Russian teammate joined Chicoutimi, the Quebec junior team he played with for three seasons before being traded to Acadie-Bathurst this summer.

Yanick Jean, Chicoutimi’s head coach, said his first meeting with Lapierre quickly revealed a 15-year-old’s passion for the sport.
