Catalina Island

The whale was found outside the small basin where boats coming to and from Catalina Island dock.

Desalination plants are operating in parts of California, including the nation’s largest facility, in Carlsbad, and a small-scale plant on Santa Catalina Island.

Catalina Island, which has plenty of horses in its history but stopped offering rides to visitors in 2008, is bringing trail rides back.

Two Southern California men were fined in excess of $60,000 each and had their fishing licenses permanently revoked for poaching abalone and spiny lobsters off the coast of Catalina Island.

The pair had apparently gone missing a few hours earlier from a 34-foot sailboat in the channel between Catalina Island and the mainland, according to a news release from the Coast Guard.
