Governor Peter Kaiser of Carinthia - the region where Villach is located - described the attack as an "unimaginable atrocity".

In Austria’s southern Carinthia province, which borders Italy and Slovenia, wind and heavy rain on Thursday night led to landslides, blocked roads and power cuts.

The accident took place near the village of Micheldorf in Carinthia state in central Austria.

Flash floods were reported also in neighboring Austria, where some 80 people were forced temporarily to leave their homes in the southern Carinthia province.

The southern state of Carinthia activated a heat protection plan for more than 900 care homes, hospitals and other sites to identify people who might be particularly vulnerable to high temperatures.
