Cape doctor

Not even the Cape Doctor, a powerful summer wind thought to relieve the city of pollution, has been able to clear it.

The south-easter, or Cape Doctor, is well-known locally for knocking people off their feet and is often at its strongest in the city centre, where the race began.

Then again, the dialogue probably didn’t help: it’s hard to get enthused when you’re trotting out lines like: “Are you trying to get under my cape, doctor?” in dodgy scenes of rooftop romance with an embarrassed-looking Nicole Kidman.

It was followed by Cape Doctor in 2001 and Nomad Jez five years later, which was nominated in that year's South African music awards.

From its bracing qualities this wind, which blows in the summer, is known as the “Cape Doctor.”
