A strike also interrupted work at the Buenavista open-pit copper mine in the Cananea mining district of the northern state of Sonora from 2007 to 2010.

County sheriff’s officials say 20-year-old Alex Leon was turned over to their custody Monday after being captured in Cananea, Sonora by Mexican authorities.

He admitted to illegally crossing into the U.S. from Mexico seven months earlier, and had worked as a municipal police officer in Cananea, Sonora, Mexico.

One of the biggest challenges is the fallout from a 2014 toxic spill at the Buenavista del Cobre copper mine in Cananea, near the top of the Rio Sonora Valley.

Costanza Della Cananea, an Italian tourist visiting Paris, said “we are disappointed because we thought we were going on a cruise on the Seine. It was the first time we were going to do it.”
