Trujillo, who is originally from Cali, Colombia, was undocumented for several years in Toronto before moving to New York to pursue a career in musical theater choreography.

He successfully pitched his idea to South America's Cali Cartel, one of the world's most dangerous crime organisations.

“I like the coaches over there and I’ll have some Cali boys on my team,” he said.

Watching owners reunite with their horses was one of the most valuable experiences for volunteers, said London Scott, founder of the local Cali Cowboy Club.

“I just came back from performing a concert in Cali and saw 20,000 Colombians singing along. Most of them were young. I told them, ‘When this song came out, you hadn’t been born yet.’”
