They worked with the nuclear waste management company Posiva to help build a final disposal facility approximately 450 meters below the islet of Olkiluoto in the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea.

Ferry companies operating between Finland and Sweden in the Gulf of Bothnia, the northernmost arm of the Baltic Sea, and Finland and Estonia had canceled most departures on Thursday.

A wonderful secondary route from Oulu, on the Gulf of Bothnia in central Finland, runs south-east inland through Kajaani to Kuopio, playing cat and mouse with the Oulu River as its heads into a land of lakes and forests.

The Baltic Sea has frozen only in parts of the Gulf of Bothnia between Finland and Sweden, the sea’s northernmost arm.

The shipment from France through neutral Sweden had originally been scheduled for December 2016, but heavy ice in the sea of Bothnia between Sweden and Finland delayed the voyage until the following year.
