It’s divided into two parts: the mainland, home to Bata, and an island called Bioko, about 150 miles to the northwest, where the capital, Malabo, is located.

In February, Hoffman says, a trial will begin on the island of Bioko, 32 kilometres off the coast of West Africa, where malaria is endemic.

The prevalence of malaria on Bioko has dropped from 45% to 12.5% in 15 years through the use of conventional measures such as indoor insecticide spraying and bed nets laced with the chemicals.

The impetus was a DNA test that revealed Hall’s ancestors were the Yoruba people from Nigeria and the Bubi from Bioko Island off the west coast of Africa.
