John Bew - A foreign policy expert who advised three Conservative prime ministers, and continues to advise Sir Keir Starmer.

In the Lords, where the former PM's resignation honours list nominates eight new peers to an already oversized assembly, expect some griping about that - keep an eye on its Chair, the historian Lord Bew.

For one thing, the updated military and foreign policy review was written by John Bew, the same foreign policy adviser who wrote the 2021 review with the title “Global Britain in a Competitive Age.”

Earlier this month, Lord Bew, chair of the House of Lords Appointment Committee, which approves peerages, denied it had tried to block Lord Lebedev being given a seat in the Lords.

But Lord Bew said: "There was no pressure on this issue from No 10 or the prime minister."
