Benedict XV

In 1920, Pope Benedict XV warned that atrocities of war had led to "the diminution of conjugal fidelity and the diminution of respect for constituted authority. Licentious habits followed, even among young women."

Pope Benedict XV commissioned the work in 1918 to ask God to end World War One.

Wilson, the son of a Presbyterian minister, initially balked at receiving a traditional blessing from Pope Benedict XV, then rejected the pontiff’s peace plan.

Newman was beatified by Pope Benedict XV, who declared that an American deacon’s recovery from a serious spine condition was due to Newman’s intercession.

The meeting, with Benedict XV on Jan. 4, 1919, came as the president toured Europe after the end of World War I.
