Bechuanaland

Following a distinguished career across south Wales which had begun in the Military Police, Charles Nunn had also worked for Bechuanaland Mounted Police, Botswana, and the Royal Oman Police.

Very few people remember that Botswana got its name at independence and until then, was known as Bechuanaland.

In 1966, Bechuanaland was reborn as Botswana, and Basutoland changed its name to Lesotho.

Working primarily with the Nairobi-based outfit Ker, Downey & Selby, he organized expeditions in Kenya before moving to Maun, then part of the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, around 1963.

Clinton noted that in 1966 when Botswana — then known as Bechuanaland — obtained independence from Britain, it had two miles of paved roads and a single public high school.
