It said it hoped to establish a self-rating system similar to the BBFC's existing agreement with Netflix.

The BBFC's latest annual report said the rating was changed because of "violence and threat" in the film, despite this being "offset by humour and an emphasis on loyalty in adversity".

Respondents expressed a desire to be warned about this type of content, according to the BBFC, which said it would continue to highlight suicide and self-harm in its advice.

The home entertainment versions are still rated U, according to the BBFC.

The 2002 film Spider-Man had its 12 certificate downgraded to PG by councillors in parts of England amid public pressure, but a number of other authorities decided to stick to the BBFC's recommended classification.
