“If I had known how dangerous it was going to be, I would have stayed to die in Venezuela with my family,” said Félix Rodríguez, a migrant from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, who was traveling with his wife and two sons, aged 13 and 14.

Last month, Yaner Fung shuttered the small supermarket he had owned in western Barquisimeto for 15 years.

Then he said he hoped his journey from Barquisimeto to some of the world’s most prestigious stages would be an inspiration.

“Cardenales,” Dudamel said, referring to the Venezuela team from his hometown of Barquisimeto.
