Fontanilla’s Filipino heritage comes from her father, Frank Fontanilla, who was born in Baguio City.

“Baguio Fruit” and dozens more trapuntos, among other works, are the subject of “Pacita Abad,” the first retrospective of the artist in the world.

Marcos spoke to reporters in the northern resort city of Baguio where he delivered a speech before cadets and former graduates of the Philippine Military Academy and repeated a vow to defend the country’s territory amid a new territorial spat with China.

He also felt that crime and corruption was rising in Manila and even in Baguio, and although he enjoyed living there, he was uncertain about gaining, or even wanting, asylum.

Life in Baguio City, about 130 miles from Manila, was somewhat more exotic than Tokyo.
