The attack on Tuesday occurred after the candidate, Heinrich Koch, who is running for municipal office in Mannheim, noticed a man “taking down and slashing” Alternative for Germany campaign posters, according to Emil Sänze, a party spokesman in the state of ��������-��ü���ٳٱ𳾲������, which includes Mannheim.

In addition to the vote for the European Parliament, ��������-��ü���ٳٱ𳾲������ will also on Sunday hold the municipal elections in which Mr. Koch is a candidate.

"We are shocked and stunned," Markus Frohnmaier, a top AfD official in the south-western state of ��������-��ü���ٳٱ𳾲������ told German media in response to the latest incident.

Five people are now known to have died since heavy rain led to rivers bursting their banks in Bavaria and ��������-��ü���ٳٱ𳾲������.

Cargo shipping remains halted on the Rhine in some areas of southern Germany, although authorities in ��������-��ü���ٳٱ𳾲������ in the south west say water levels are set to fall in the coming days.
