The survey was ordered hours after a petition claimed that the mosque was built after Mughal ruler Babur destroyed the Hari Har temple in the 1520s.

Dr. Babur Lateef, an eye physician and surgeon who serves as chairman of the Prince William County School Board, entered the race last month and other candidates from both parties are still expected to join.

At the age of 53, Gulbadan Begum - daughter of Babur, founder of the Mughal empire - and 11 women from the royal household - left the confines of a harem in Fatehpur Sikri to set off on a journey that would stretch across six years.

Gulbadan - which roughly translates to rose-hued skin - was born in Kabul in 1523 to Dildar Begum, emperor Babur's third-oldest wife.

Thousands of Hindu pilgrims, white-bearded priests, dhoti-clad holy men and other devotees who had gathered for a political rally suddenly stormed the historic Babri mosque, built in the 16th century by Babur, the first Mughal emperor, on the site of the supposed birthplace of the Hindu deity Ram.
