“We have not spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and 30 years on this just because we want to have a trail to this pretty place. It’s also a safety issue,” said John Harch, a retired surgeon who is president of the Mount Shasta Trail Assn. and has been working for decades — fruitlessly he fears — on trail access.

The Mount Shasta Trail Assn. spent years trying to purchase a small piece of land from the foundation to create a trail from nearby Hedge Creek Falls, which is owned by the city, up to Mossbrae.

The Mount Shasta Trail Assn., which was bequeathed hundreds of thousands of dollars from an anonymous donor who wanted to see access to the falls, tried for years to negotiate with the railroad, Harch said.

A recent report from the California New Car Dealers Assn. found that new vehicle registrations increased by 8.3% in the first quarter of 2025 compared with the same time last year.

Their results were published Thursday in the Journal of the American Medical Assn.
