“We have valuable resources to lend to this crisis—whether it is staff, space, equipment, supplies or other capabilities. ASCs are coordinating with the public health teams on local and regional levels to identify how their facilities can be utilized most effectively on a case by case basis.”

After analyzing 50,000 abortions provided in ASCs and clinics, we found that 96.7 percent of patients had no complications after their abortions, while 3 percent of patients had a minor complication.

Ultimately, only 0.3 percent of patients had a major complication following their abortions—and there was no difference between the ASCs and office-based settings when it came to complication rates for abortions.

There are 5,800 ASCs across the United States.

To increase hospital bed and room availability early in the pandemic, Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies can give special authorization for additional urgent elective procedures to be completed in ASCs, rather than in hospitals.
