In February this year, Armen Sargsyan, the leader of a pro-Russian paramilitary group in eastern Ukraine, died in hospital after an explosion in the entrance hall of a residential building in north-west Moscow.

Others - including one of Armen Sargsyan's bodyguards - were also reportedly seriously injured, with some sources saying one other person had died.

Armen Vartian, an attorney representing Heritage, said the allegations were unfounded, calling it “an unfortunate misunderstanding.”

That could diminish their official numbers and reduce their power when it comes to redrawing political districts in places with large Armenian communities, said Sophia Armen, chair of the Census Taskforce of the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region.

“We will now be undercounted by potentially hundreds of thousands of people,” Armen said.
