President Biden raised the issue of Americans wrongfully detained in China directly with President Xi Jinping earlier this month when the two met during the Apec summit in Peru, according to an American official familiar with the negotiations.

But the two leaders who met during the Apec summit managed to agree on a number of issues ranging from tackling climate change together to resuming military communication.

The approval follows a meeting between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping at Apec summit in the US last week.

Albanese said the incident was raised through "all of the normal channels", but didn't disclose if it was discussed in his private meeting with Xi at APEC.

In the statement, he noted that it occurred just as President Biden and Mr. Xi were holding their own tension-lowering talks at APEC.
