The district council report said: "The development has a detrimental impact upon the surrounding landscape... resulting in adverse impacts to the natural beauty, special qualities, distinctive character, landscape and scenic beauty of the South Devon AONB."

"We think of our beautiful landscapes as being on the ground, but 50% of our landscape is above our heads, in the sky," said Linda Nunn, director of Cranborne Chase AONB.

The AONB's website describes it as "tranquil and unspoilt landscape including wildlife-rich estuaries, ancient heaths, windswept shingle beaches and historic towns and villages".

In total, about 1,500 pieces were found at the dig by a team from the AONB's Altogether Archaeology Project.

Henry Oliver, director of the North Wessex AONB, said these projects could have a huge impact on the rural landscape.
