That afternoon, despite the ongoing manhunt, I took a drive along the Androscoggin, if for no other reason than to escape that dreadful feeling.

Maine’s third-largest river, the Androscoggin flows through downtown Lewiston, past Lisbon Falls, and past my town before heading out to sea.

At some point, I took up the strange ritual of driving north, often at night, along familiar back roads, through the rural neighborhood where the shooter lived, past Just-in-Time Recreation, down Main Street, following the bend of the Androscoggin River, to Schemengees Bar and Grille, where the second shooting had taken place.

Both the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Portland Police Department tactical teams were responding to a location where the shooter’s vehicle was abandoned by the Androscoggin River on the evening of Oct.

According to the transcripts, there were 50 911 calls in little more than 50 minutes to two dispatch centers operated by Lewiston-Auburn and Androscoggin County.
