They ended up mostly near Madrid, in the central archives of the administration in the university town of Alcalá de Henares where - like most of Spain's colonial history in Africa - they were forgotten.

Alberto Rojo Puebla, 34, a train conductor from Alcalá de Henares, about 200 miles south of Pamplona, traveled to the festival this year to soak up the culture, despite not being a fan of bullfighting.

He is currently director of Madrid’s Abadía Theater and the Corral of Comedy theater in Alcalá de Henares city.

Manuel Franco, a professor and researcher in epidemiology at the University of Alcalá de Henares and an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University, said, “We have health care workers who are now not only exhausted but also angry because they have seen some improvement in the protocols since last spring, but not the hiring of more people that was promised.”

“We’re definitely not yet in the March-April situation, but there are reasons to fear that we could get there again,” said Manuel Franco, a researcher and professor of epidemiology at the University of Alcalá de Henares.
