Prisons in Toulon, Aix-En-Provence, Marseille, Valence and Nîmes in southern France, and in Villepinte and Nanterre, near Paris were among those targeted.

The newspaper lists six establishments as being targeted: in Toulon, Aix-en-Provence and Marseille, Valence and Nîmes, Luynes, Villepinte, and Nanterre.

In a statement, Aix-en-Provence chief prosecutor Jean-Luc Blachon said that Tuesday's arrests were the result of investigations carried out over recent months, and that police were examining "several spots in the area".
