Within an hour Trump was reported to be back on Air Force One, while other leaders held various informal meetings in Rome.

But according to US media reports, it was Bessent, inundated with calls from business leaders, that played a key part in swaying Trump, including with conversations on Air Force One the weekend beforehand and in the Oval Office on the morning of the decision.

But that may be set to change, as Trump told reporters on Air Force One he would soon be announcing tariff rates for imported semiconductors.

Trump echoed these remarks last weekend, saying that only a "fairly small number of people" had been impacted, when he was asked by the BBC about the outbreak aboard Air Force One.

He also told reporters on board his Air Force One plane last week that "pharma" tariffs would arrive "at a level that you haven't really seen before", saying these would be announced "in the near future".
