In ancient Greece, Tinos was reputed to be the home of Aeolis, the king of the winds, who whipped around the mountains and carved giant sculptures from the dark granite.

The location, known as Aeolis Mensae, has a number of geological faults that may have fractured nearby permafrost and released any methane trapped inside.

But some of the craters at Aeolis Dorsa are only a few tens of metres across, suggesting that quite small meteors made it through the thin atmosphere.

In Aeolis, of course, the centre of gravity moved to the Attalid capital, Pergamum.
