The incident took place during a conflict between the Georgian government and separatists from the ethnic minority known as Abkhazians.

Neither do the Basques, Catalans, Scots, Kashmiris, Tibetans, Abkhazians, Ossetians, Lombards, Igbo, Oromo, Uyghurs, Tamils and Québécois, nor dozens of other peoples who have created nationalist movements to seek self-determination but failed to achieve it.

Abkhazian flags are waved enthusiastically by the home crowd, and both teams sing their ‘national’ anthems prior to kick-off.

Years of international isolation, and continued attempts by Georgia to block Abkhazians from taking part in international events has segregated them from the outside world.
