East Germany vs. West Germany: 's the difference?
After World War II, Germany was split into two zones, referred to as East Germany and West Germany. West Germany, the western two-thirds of the country, was the area occupied by the USA, UK, and France. East Germany, the eastern third of the country, was the area occupied by what was the Soviet Union. Tensions between the Soviet Union and the other allies led to the formulation of the two zones as seperate states with a border between them (see Berlin Wall). The two were reunified in 1990.
